Can you believe this fool?!!!

Oh before I forget.  On Sunday, before I left for Austria I wanted to go and buy some gifts for my friends.  Also it was one of those days where I really really wanted to spend time by myself. So I spent the morning reading and later on in the afternoon when the weather was better and not blazing hot, I took a trip to the Old Quarters in Hanoi to find some gifts.

While walking around John (the Nigerian) called me and wanted to know if I wanted to have dinner with him.  (Oh John the Irish is in Ireland right now so no funny stories for you).  I was a bit annoyed as he has been asking me to hang out with him for a while and I had been refusing.  Why you ask?  Because when we first met he told me he was interested in me and I told him I was not. He keeps pushing it and now I am at point where it is blatantly annoying as F#@K. So last week he told me he was interested in me and his feeling was developing more and what was “I going to do about it”? Can you imagine this fool?  I told him I had no interest in him at all. I told him it would be best if we are not friends if he does not understand that I was not interested in him.  This fool had the audacity to ask me if I thought “him keeping away from him would let the feelings go away?” can you believe that?   He does not understand No means No, I had to tell him off.

What is wrong with him?  Nothing, he is just not my type or I guess I have dated his type and is not something I want to get back to.  He is very clingy.  As a friend he want to know where I am going and what I am doing and assume I am helpless. F@#k that.  He is not my mother or father, I don’t answer to him. He wants to come to my house all the time and just watch TV. If you know me well, I am not a home body, I have to be doing something all the time, sitting home and just watching TV is the last thing I want to do.  Also he calls too many times, calling me early on Saturday and things.  Plus he attempted to kiss me and I was like, what the ….  That is when was the first time I had to let him know.

So back to the story, so he called me on Sunday and asked if I wanted to grab something to eat.  I hesitated as I was not really hungry and while I wanted to grab something to eat, I did not want a sit down dinner, plus I wanted to spend time by myself. But since I was leaving and I had already said my piece to him, I thought there was no harm in.  I told him sure and I would be in town; he should therefore call me once he gets into the city center.

He called me once he got there and we met up.  He indicated that he wanted to have dinner.  Then right before we left for dinner he indicated that he does not have any money.  I was like “why?” did you forget your wallet at home? He was like no; it’s just that I have no money in my account.  Hmmm.  Being the person that I am I decided that there was no further question needed.

Now why would this fool not eat at home if he felt that he had no money? I mean it’s about setting your priorities straight right?

Now before you jump into conclusion, when I go out with this guy I pay for myself. I have paid for him once or twice so that he knows that we are just friend and as expressed to him, I was not interested in him what so ever.

So yes he tells me he has no money. I did not ask the obvious question of how you were going to eat; especially since he did not ask me if I had money to feed him.  So I told him he should pick a place that he wanted to go as I was not really hungry.  He decided to pick KFC.  Now, for my less travelled friends, if you are in a developing country and see fast food chains like KFC, McDonalds and such don’t go to those places as you will never get value for money. Meaning that food would be over priced, they are not as good and oh yes the menu will most likely not be the same.

Since did not want to ask any more questions, I told him to pick place that he wanted to go and eat and we can go there. So this man decides that he wanted KFC.  Once there he chose his own selection. When the food came it was very very small. My niece Akua would be disappointed. I later had to give him more money to order food.

Honestly I have nothing more to say about that day.  After we ate, I went to buy the rest of the gifts and I went home.

Office Retreat

Hi.
Last week we went to our office country retreat.  It was very nice.  The retreat was held in Hoa Binh, this is two and a half hours away from Hanoi.  The ride there was very alright, however there was one time where we almost got into a car accident.  The reason being is the road was twist and turn and the bus did not slow down for this. Rather instead it speeds through the whole time.  The car tipped and well we all started screaming.

I spent the time interacting with some of the staff from the other affiliates.  I did not realize how many people in the other office that I had not met.  There was one guy whom I swear was a photographer for the office, only to find out that he had been working for the organization for over a year.  Man was I a bit embarrassed

We spent two days at the retreat, I managed to see two snakes, and if you know me very well you will know that I am scared as hell of snakes. I could not believe it.  On our way back to Hanoi they the driver gave us a vomit bag.  I was happy to get it.  However I forced myself to sleep so that I did not had to use the bag.

Tomorrow morning I will be fly to Austria to go to one of very close friend Maya’s wedding.  I can’t wait to see my girls and Liam, my friend Ritah and Svein’s baby boy.  Ahhh.  I can’t wait.

I can’t wait to be part of the crowd instead of being stuck out. Also to experience the cold.  You can’t believe to understand how much I want to experience the cold.  Yes it’s hot here, but man, I realize that I am a child of four seasons.

I will update you my experience. Until next time

Angolan Party

6-10-2012

My last week was spent half at home, the hospital and at work.  I have to say it was mostly spend in bed.  I have been sick lately and I guess because I have been on a go for the past few weeks it finally took its toll on me.

I have been mostly week I guess.  Now that I am writing this, hmmm, did anything interesting happen? Oh yes, bloody hell.  So I went out to get some drinks at lunch time with a few colleagues, we were walking towards a table when the table beside the empty one, a group of men started pointing at me and laughing.  I was so disturbed and caught off guard that I ruined my whole mood.  One of my colleagues just said to ignored them as we walk towards the table.  But this time I could not.  I ask that we leave the restaurant.  We walked to another restaurant.

I am not sure why I was caught off guard. I mean I experience it every day; it’s just that this time, I don’t know. I really can’t explain it. It was very “bush” or “village” like.  I don’t know if this make sense in English but some of you would understand this.  This is the only way to describe it.

Oh, on the weekend I went out with John, no not the Irish guy as many of you have been asking about him but the Nigerian guy.  We met other people from Angola, so you know I was a bit excited to meet other Africans. Well I guess I should not have been too excited. As many of you know Angolans peak Portuguese, and these guys spoke little English. Conversation was very very difficult.  But it was still nice to meet them.  The next day they had a birthday party and I went.  They live in a gated embassy/UN compound and it did not look like Vietnam that is all I have to say.

The party itself was nice, I got to meet some of the other guys I had met at the club the night before, as well as the ambassador, who I met when I first got here.  I asked them to show me the Angolan dance Zouk dance. Now you know I really can’t dance; well now I know that I really can’t dance.  Note to self take some Zouk classes if I find it here.

I came home early as I was very sick and could not contain it any longer. Overall it was very nice to be out of my house and out of the crowded space of Hanoi for a few hours.

So how is Vietnam going for me now?  hmmm, I don't know, I have not had days where I wanted to come home, but sometimes the ignorance can be a bit much to deal with.
By far one of the best pictures I have taken. Very nice kid also, he will really break hearts later on

No, my skin colour does not come off!!!

Workshop
It’s nice to be back in Hanoi.  The whole of last week I was in Nghe An province, in a small town.  I was there to conduct a workshop on Result Base Management and The Logical Model. The workshop consisted of about 20 people from different districts in Nghe An province.  The participants consisted of officials from the village to the provincial level.  I had met some of them before, however some of the participants were new to me.  There were a few women but mostly men.

My colleagues and I got there on Monday night around 22h30.  The train was a long ride. Oh I should have taken a picture of our cabin.  It has six beds, which meant that we were packed in our cabins like sardines.  Upon arrival, I was much relived.

Field visit
Once we got to the hotel, we were told that there was power outage so there was no power.  I was not bothered as we were assured that there would be power the next day.  Nope.  We did not have power the whole week. I did not mind that we did not have power as I was content with using the generator when I am conducting my PowerPoint. However, the room that were using was as hot and humid as hell. By 10am people were falling asleep and couldn’t sit still.

The next day we moved to the downstairs of the hotel and got some fans in the room with the help of generators.  Participants became more involved and active. The workshop went really well. After we went to the field to check out some of the projects we were doing.

field visit

On our way there I sat beside one of the participants in a taxi.  She first touched my leg and then robbed my thigh a bit.  I was like oookay.  I had a feeling what she was trying to do as I was told by John that people had done this to him.  I ignored the situation.  The fieldwork was good; I discover different method of rice and maize cultivation.

By the time we came back to the hotel our two other colleagues Jonathan and Dominique had arrived come from Hanoi. They were each going to conduct a workshop with the same participants in communication and gender respectively.
This is the girl that touched me in the Taxi

Thursday was a tiring and hot as there was no electricity, we were limited to use the generator for the fan and for our PowerPoint.  After work my translator Tung and I went for a walk at the beach. On our way back we met a man and a women from the village.  Of course the first thing the women went for was my hair. Then while standing there and conversing with the man in  broken Vietnamese she grabbed my am and began to rub my arm intensely.  I was like what are you doing. I pulled my arm from her. She looked at me shocked. Then she told my translator that my skin colour was not coming off.

WHAT!!!!     I could not believe that this woman actually tested me.

This child just wanted her picture taken

Oh this child was all over me during our trim to Nghe An
Honestly I could not believe that. The next day similar situation happened. That’s crazy eh? I am reading a book right now, I don’t recall what exactly it said but one of the character says something that I think I should take it. the character says something along the line of “life being one big joke, and if one does not laugh during these times, then they do not understand the joke.

I guess what I am trying to say is that we shall see how many of these jokes I will get; I hope I get the jokes more than I would get frustrated by them.

clam picking

I will write more blogs. I know I have been lagging behind.
Me doing clam picking

The workshop itself went really well. I was so proud when people started understanding it and started explaining them to their colleagues.

My beef

Being here and working in other countries has taught me a bit about the expatriate community.  Take it as you will as this is only my observation.  Men especially have come to believe that they can have any girl that they want.
This building is the center of town

Why this observation you ask?

When my friends and I go to a new place we attempt to connect our friends with other friends or acquaintances that may be in the same place where friends are. And so this story begins.

This is a KFC building
My good friend Margrethe informed me that she has a friend here in Hanoi who is nice and would be cool to hang with. He has been in this area of the world for a while and therefore would be able to show me around.  Of course this was exciting. She connected us on facebook.  I contacted the guy and introduced myself and told him where I was living as he is also in Hanoi.  He wrote to me and indicated that he wanted to meet up on Friday night at around 7h30pm.

This guy called me and indicated that he would not arrive until 8h30 pm as he had something to do and would be running a bit late.  This was fine as it’ was a Friday. I had planned on meeting up with some of my other friends later on in the evening anyway so I thought I meet with them later.  So I was like sure. This guy did not show up until 11h30pm.
The architect is the same person who created the Eiffel in Paris

I was a bit turned off by the time but whatever; we had good conversation. But I was a bit surprise as he said he went through all of my face book pictures and was very excited to meet me. I was like okay? After talking here for like an hour or so we went bike riding by Tay Ho Lake. We rode a motorcycle around the lake and he gave me a tour around the city.  This was very nice of him. Something which I was very grateful for.
local bar. I liked the writing on the walls
On our way around we stopped by his place as he said he wanted to get a drink of water.  So we got to his apartment, he made a sandwich for himself as he said he was hungry.  He ate, and then we talked, and then the conversation went to my personal life and relationship, which I was not comfortable with as I did not like where it was going. Also he was getting too comfortable in his apartment. I told him it was past 3am and I needed to go to sleep.  So we left

A week later he was  leaving for a while out of the country so on Monday he called that he would arrive at my place at 10h30pm to say bye before he left.  He did not arrive until 11h30pm. While talking to this guy, he kept talking about my body type and shape and how I am the “perfect shape” so to say.  I never understand what this means. I am not sure if guys think this turns girls on, but it is a line that I have heard before. Now this was going on and on for a while.  I changed the topic many times but it kept going back to how my attitude, shape, body size and such are what he looks for in a girl.
Ho Chi Minh mausoleum at night

What was interesting about this guy who kept me intrigue is that that he realized that I have issue with controlling my feelings or did like talking about my feelings.  Additionally the fact that I don’t like compromising myself or making comprises about some of my beliefs. Which I am still working on. Overall it was a good conversation with this guy. However, I had to make it clear to him that I was not interested in him at all as I was getting over someone else. Still, he would not quit. We spoke for an hour and at 12 we ended the conversation as I was yawning.

The president's palace
The deal breaker was at 12 when I walked him to the elevator, he was like what time are you waking up tomorrow?  I was like 7h30 am. He was like well I don’t have to wake up until 6h30 am.  I was standing there, looking stupid although I had an idea where this fool was going with the conversation. So I was like oh okay I guess you have to wake up earlier than I do then. He was like yes I do, so I don’t mind sleeping over.  WHAT!!! I played it stupid again and said well I don’t think you would fit on my couch. He was like; I was talking about sleeping on your bed.  I was like, no that is not going to happen.

Why did this fool assumed that anything was going to happen? Mind you the guy is like twice my age.

The next day I was talking to my work colleague about my night, and he was like what’s his name, and I indicated his name. He was like; he has gone out with half the expatriate community.
But I guess I should have known better since both times he came by my place, it was “booty call” hours.

That is just my beef.

But yes the beef is that foreign men who are abroad realize that the locals are interested in then, then they get this huge head and think that everyone find them as attractive. They need to snap out of it.

I prefer the stares now!!

I prefer the stares now!!

Yes, I said it. I would rather prefer when people here stare at me. Why? You ask. Because at least then they were only staring, now they are touching me. I don’t understand either. Up until recently its just been people touching me.  Some individuals would walk up to me and touch me. When I tell them not to touch me or pull myself away from them they react in shocked that I can actually move.

Its funny. I am objectified as a mannequin or something. And when they realize that I can speak then it is the biggest shocker.

It all started on my first field trip when a woman at the train station pulled my hair. I was upset by that as I was like “what the F#*K” then I walked away. Then other time I was walking with a friend when a boy walked straight up to me, grabbed my hair and walked off as if I was an object he touched.  I was like “what the F*#K is wrong with you?" He broke out and started laughing hysterical. When I walked up to him he was very very surprised then he ran off.

From then on this has been a constant thing.  Bloody hell. I cant believe this.

On a side note.  You know how in airports there are lights on the ground that directs the air planes as to where the landing strip is? Well in Dien Bien Airport, this man on a motorcycle holding umbrella is used as the light. I kid you not.  I was very surprise when I was told why he was by the landing strip.  Only in  Viet Nam

Dramaaaaa!!!

Hi, after my week from the field, it was very very hectic.  As you recall, I signed the contract and moved into my new place.  Well that ended up being a drama.  But I am happy to say that I have relocated to a new apartment.  So how did this happen you ask?

So before I left for the field, I wrote a letter to the real estate agent and the landlord asking if they were going to fulfill the contract.  The reason why I wrote this letter was because I had been in the apartment for three days and the list of things which they said they would fix had still not been completed. The bathtub still had a leek; my microwave was still on top of the fridge which I cannot reach as the kitchen counter was too small to put it on, and I could not reach it. There were other issues among this.

I wrote this letter because I was going away for a whole week and wanted to know if I would need to move out before I went to the field; if they were not going to fulfill the contract.  They indicated that they would and I should therefore leave my stuff in the apartment.  In the letter I informed them that I would pay the rent deposit once the list of things which they said they would fix and bring to the apartment is completed.

They agreed.

So I left on Sunday to Vinh City, and retuned a week later on a Saturday.  When I returned the only thing that was fixed was the sink, everything was still as it was. I thought I would address it on Monday was I was too tired.

On Saturday I went by the store to buy bread, on my way up to my apartment a woman ask for my phone number as the landlord wanted it.  I provided to her.  The landlord text me and asked for his money.  This was a surprise to me, as I wrote like a two page letter detailing what the contract said and also what they have failed to do.

I contacted the real-estate agent and asked her if she had forwarded the letter and if the landlord understood it. She said she did and in fact explains to the landlord what the contract meant, he understood the letter. I told her that he texted me asking for his money.  She said she did not understand why he would. The real-estate agent asked if everything was there. I indicated in fact the only thing that was fixed was the bathtub, otherwise nothing else. She said she thought perhaps we should look for a new apartment.  I agreed. However we would start on Monday.

On Sunday the real-estate’s partner came to my apartment to check if everything was done.  I told him no, and emphasized that the shower curtain used by the previous tenant is still hanging in the bathroom, I asked for it to be changed and they still have not changed it  (Please note I am paying for a furnished apartment, which means everything has to be in the apartment). He took the shower curtain, and hours later the maid came with the same curtain, washed. It still had stains on it.  I was too tired to speak broken Vietnamese with the maid.

On Monday the real-estate agent called me and asked if we may look at some apartments.  I agreed. We went to look at four apartments that I had rejected earlier.  I was too tired to get upset. Or maybe I was just over it. So I just said I did not like it and I had rejected these apartments earlier.

After work on Monday I went to look at some apartments of my own. Around 8pm, I was coming home from looking at one apartment when the real-estate agent called me.  She indicated

That the landlord called her and told her that I had to be out of the apartment tonight or tomorrow morning as he had rented out the apartment. WHAT!!! That is what I said. I was like since when and I think we should meet and talk.  The real-estate agent proceeded to tell me that had I paid the rent and forgot about what the contract had said I would not have been in this mess that I am in. Either way the landlord wanted me out.  I asked her to contact the landlord so that she, my manager, and the landlord may sit down tonight and talk about it.  She said she would.

An hour or so later I called her and asked if the landlord was coming as it was 21h30 and I still had not heard from her or the landlord.  She asked me if the landlord was there. WHAT! She herself is not at my house! Anyway I told her no he was not. She indicated that she told her partner to call but I guess he did not. She suggests that we talk tomorrow.

So I spent a few hours folding and packing my stuff.  Additionally I contact some apartments on the New Hanoian website.  I then made some appointment to see apartments at 9h00 the next morning.

The whole day on Tuesday was spent looking for an apartment. I decided to settle on one that I wanted before but it was not set up yet.  It was now set up and ready to be moved it.  This was perfect.

At around 6pm, the real-estate agent called me and told me that she went by the apartment but she was told that I had moved out.  WHAT!! If you recall she is the one that called me and told me that the landlord wanted me out last night, the latest this morning as someone was moving in. I was like yea; I did as you told me the landlord wanted me out.

She once again blames me by going according to the contract. If I was more flexible, then this would not have happen.  RIGHT! As if people here do not lose their money all the time.  Hence the reason why I did not pay because this is a common practice.

She asked if I was going to go with her tomorrow to look for a place I was like sure. So the next day we went to see some shabby places and she asked me to pick one.  I indicated that I was not interested in any of those.  She became upset and told me that she does not know what to do with me.  As I did not seem to like want anyone of the apartments that she was showing me.  I was too tired and annoyed to argue. Plus I had that apartment in mind.

The next day she called me to see other places. I told her that I was not interested as I had found an apartment.  She was like okay; well I will come by your work so that you may pay the rent and utility for the time you stayed in the apartment. Sarcastically I was like “okay, sure, whatever”

So she came by my work on Wednesday and brought the bill.  In the meeting was my Vietnamese colleague, my manager the real-estate agent and I.  Basically she wanted me to pay the electricity bill, and half a month of rent.  She put this in and envelope and laid it on the table.

In the meeting she express that she tried to help me by asking the landlord to fulfill the contact but it is a slow process. Also while I was gone a week the landlord was supposed to have done it. She asked her partner and the partner told her everything was done so she did not check. She did not realize that nothing was done.  If I had paid then the landlord would have fulfill the contract.

I informed her that in the contract it said that once I sign the contract, everything would be fixed but once it was signed, nothing was done. Also a week was given while I was away to get everything fixed and nothing was still done. Also in my letter that I wrote before I left for my fieldwork it said that.  She indicated to my Vietnamese colleague that in Vietnam the contract doesn’t really mean anything.  It’s just a formality.

My colleague got really mad and told her that what was the point of the contract is if it does not mean anything. In our company some of the colleagues have been ripped off by landlords pulling the same tactic; that was why I was informed not to pay before all of these were done.

Furthermore and to keep this meeting from being longer than it is becoming, it says in the contract that if the list of things which they are suppose to provide was not done, then the contract would be void and “the lessee would not be relived of her contractual duties.”  This went on for a while.  The landlord asked us to give her a list of the case we are presenting to her as she clearly understand that they do not have a case so she need to go back to the office to present our case to her manager.  We listed our case for her and she left.

The next day she said she wanted to meet again with us with her partner. We said Friday would be fine. On Friday she and her colleague came. He was all about yelling and screaming. My colleagues once again, my manager, Vietnamese colleague and I sat there and listen to this fool make a fool of himself.  After we ignored him and spoke back to the real-estate as if he did not exist. We informed the both of them that they broke the contract and we are going with the contract.

This time they open the envelope with the bill.  The bill said that I owe a month of electricity. Which was false as the bill was much higher than owning a full house.  My manager informed her that she lived in a 4 bedroom house; she paid less utility than I was being told to pay for staying in the apartment for 5 days. So we don’t believe them.  For the rent. They wanted to charge me for half a month of rent.  Five days for stay there and a week of my things being there while I was in the field.

We informed them that we were not paying and for the same list of reason we gave them yesterday. They broke the contract.  The left with the bill

So this was my week two weeks ago.

Yes I am in my new apartment and the landlord, I couldn’t have asked for a better one. Very understanding and he gives me fruits. You know how I like to eat.  J

For those of you who know my experiences from Zimbabwe, you can now say that I do not have good experiences with renting apartments
